Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Will I need money?

Your tuition covers all billeting (housing), meals, admission to all scheduled activities, and transportation (transportation to and from registration is your responsibility). We recommend that you bring some spending money for any souvenirs you may wish to purchase.

2. Can I bring my camera?

Yes! Cameras are allowed; however, some areas of the military bases we visit are classified top secret and do not allow photography. You will be asked to put away your camera when we visit those sites.

3. How strenuous is the Physical Training (PT)?

Physical training is designed to teach you the importance of physical fitness - it is not meant to be “easy.” Cadets who do not pass the initial physical fitness will be placed on a remedial PT program.

4. Will we have free time?

Yes. Free time is scheduled in the evenings throughout the session.

5. Can I call home?

You can call home during designated times, which are provided to parents upon acceptance into the program.  Individual cellular telephones will be confiscated upon arrival to camp, and returned at the end of the session.

6. Can I send and receive mail?

You may send and receive mail during the sessions.  Parents will be given the mailing address upon acceptance into the program. Cadets should bring paper, envelopes, and stamps should they wish to write home.

7. What type of weather should I expect?

Since the Academies are held in the summer, we expect that the weather will be very warm and humid. However, the weather is always unpredictable, so prepare for rain or chilly weather (It can get very chilly in the barracks in the evenings).

8. Is this like going to boot camp?

The first few days at the Academy are a lot like being in boot camp. We are very strict and hold everyone to the highest standard. You are expected to work as a team and fulfill your obligations during the week. That being said, we want you have a very positive experience and gain a strong foundation of leadership skills.

9. Who are the escorts?

The escorts are a mix of Freedom Alliance staff and cadre, military personnel and trained volunteers.

10. What is Freedom Alliance?

Freedom Alliance is an educational and charitable organization, founded in 1990 by the late LtGen Ed Bronars, USMC and LtCol Oliver L. North, USMC (Ret.) with the mission of honoring and encouraging military service. In addition to the Military Leadership Academy, Freedom Alliance operates the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund which provides scholarships for the dependent children of military personnel killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty. You can learn more about Freedom Alliance by visiting the website at www.freedomalliance.org.

11. What is the male to female ratio?

The male / female ratio averages 50/50.

12. What will I learn about leadership?

Our leadership curriculum is based upon seven core values: Selfless Service, Teamwork, Integrity, Dependability, Responsibility, Respect and Courage. You will learn why these basic qualities are important in leadership and how to foster their development.  We teach leadership based on the US Army’s doctrine of BE, KNOW, and DO. You will also have the opportunity to be placed into a leadership post in the class chain-of-command, where you will gain practical leadership experience.

13. Will I need to bring any identification?

A valid photo ID is required to attend the Academy. The preferred type of ID is a government issued ID, such as a driver’s license or passport. School issued ID cards are acceptable, if they have a photo. If you do not have either of the above, you can get a state issued photo ID card from your local Department of Motor Vehicles.
