Activities

The Military Leadership Academy is unique because it teaches young Americans how to apply the tried and true leadership principles of the U.S. military to everyday life.  Below are a few examples of activities cadets will engage in during the camp.

Team-building Exercises:  Cadets will engage in various exercises and activities that promote and exemplify our core values, emphasizing teamwork.  Through activities such as a leadership reaction course and confidence course, cadets learn to support the team’s success before their own and their success is dependent on the team’s.

MLA Cadet Leadership Opportunities: In addition to the Cadre, the Academy adopts a similar cadet command structure utilized by the USMC Officer Candidate School to provide hands-on leadership opportunities and experiences for cadets by assigning leadership roles. This practice challenges students to set the example for their fellow cadets and teaches the necessity of ensuring the accountability and well being of those they lead. These positions are changed regularly to ensure that every student has the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to lead.

Land Navigation:  This course comprises reading and interpreting topographical maps, identifying land features, learning to read a lensatic compass, and shooting an azimuth.  This introductory course not only provides the cadet with valuable practical knowledge, but also provides an edge for those seeking to serve in the military.

Military Operations in Urban Terrain: Cadets had the opportunity to conduct training in a 16 building complex with single and multiple story buildings used to acclimate soldiers to fighting in urban environments. Cadets were given an introductory class on this style of warfighting and practiced clearing rooms, field tactics, reconnaissance, ambushes, and camouflage.

Drill and Ceremony:  Cadets learn drill and ceremony (the art of marching) at the Academy.  This military tradition teaches basic foundations of following orders and the importance of attention to detail.  Cadets have the opportunity to take charge and drill their fellow cadets while in leadership roles.

Physical Training (PT):  Through a daily regimen of physical exercises, cadets learn the importance of a physically healthy lifestyle.  Cadets are encouraged to continue a similar routine upon return from camp. PT activities include group running, push-ups, sit-ups, and various calisthenics and cardio-aerobic exercises.
